My Views On Wolf Type Dogs by Becky Smith, Mahooli Miniature Poodles

I first became aware of these types of dogs back in 2006, originally the Northern Inuit, then the others as the breeders split and went their separate ways. I did some research into the origins of these breeds and the following is my views based on that research.

There is no doubt in my mind that these ‘breeds’ surfaced when the keeping of wolf hybrids were banned, in much the same way that Irish Staffies surfaced when Pit Bulls were banned. There is also no doubt that there are some lines in these breeds that have wolf in them, this is evidenced by yellow eyes, smaller ears and a far more pointed and triangular shape to the head. However, I also believe that these are sufficiently far back that they should not cause a problem but be aware when buying pups that have come from an older stud dog or bitch. I feel that most dogs these days are an amalgamation of GSD, Siberian Husky and Malamute in the main with probably other breeds chucked in for good measure, some are very collieish.

I find it very sad that there are now so many offshoots of these breeds that I am not surprised that people get confused when looking for a puppy, however, for me, they are all essentially the same breed derived from the same dogs but are now, only just, being bred separately for slightly different traits.

I am not of the opinion that any of these breeds are particularly wolf looking and many seem to be poor examples of their parent breeds. However, these are newly emerging breeds and only time will sort this out.

However, for anyone wishing to purchase a puppy of any of these types then I would strongly recommend reading the breed standard, be wary if there isn’t one, and visiting as many breeders of your choosen type as possible, long before you get your puppy. Make sure both parents have had the relevant health tests, particularly hips, elbows and eyes and do not accept any excuses as to why it hasn’t been done. Always ask to see the original certificates for these.

All I can say is research and research again and do nto accept anything you hear as gospel, always find out for yourself and that way you will get the companion you want rather than it turning out differently from that which you were told you were getting!
